Hubble Space Telescope

The Hubble Space Telescope was launched into space on April 24, 1990, from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard the space shuttle Discovery. While an academic history has been written of the development of HST leading to its launch, no history has yet been written of the nearly three decades it has operated in space.

Under a contract with NASA and Foresight Science & Technology signed in November 2014, I have been writing the history of HST’s operations starting with its launch. This project also includes the creation of an archive of oral history and documentary information relating to HST.

My history of HST operations, which will be titled Not Yet Imagined: A Study of Hubble Space Telescope Operations, is scheduled to be published in 2020 by the NASA History Office.

My Canadianspace.ca blog contains articles discussing my work on this history project. An early newspaper article on my work with this book is here.
